Early Sources of Ins-pie-ration

When I dove head-first into the world of pie-making last year, I had no idea what I was doing. So like most people, I turned to the web for inspiration... specifically Instagram. Specifically specifically the hashtag "#pieart".  

The first three postings that caught my eye were submitted by three master pie-makers who quickly became my weekly go-to for inspiration (and perpetual "dammit, how they heck did they do that?" angst). I highly recommend following these folks - they inspire me to up my game every week, and are some of the kindest, most responsive Instagrammers out there! 

One day I will learn to make those tiny tiny little dough braids...

 

Jo Harrington (aka Jojoromancer) is a longtime London Foodie who has challenged herself to create 3 pies a week which she posts on her epic Instagram account. Not only is she a prolific poster, her pies are creative, flawlessly executed, and her photos gorgeous! Here's a small taste.

A selection of mini Strawberry, Lime and Cardamom Pies. I lucked out at Waitrose - they had stacks of strawberries reduced to pretty much nothing, as they had reached their "sell by" date. Kristin (aka Krisden2) is a Canadian baker (hey, me too!)  who is forever pushing the envelope with different techniques involving colour, blending different dough types, mixing in different food media, and covering all manner of interesting subjects - from whimsical seasonal scenes to nifty geometric compositions. A delightful pair of strawberry-raspberry black bottom pies. The larger of the two has a wonderful chocolate-espresso pastry dough blend as well. Not only is this a delicious flavour pairing, but the colour is just so pretty too. Inspiration is all around you. Your pastry is a blank canvas waiting for animation. Try to capture what you see and re-create it. Maybe the beautiful pattern on some linens, or the silhouette of flowers in your garden. Pie artistry is endless. Mariah (aka Surpies) hails from North Texas and runs a pie bakery called "Surpies!" where she creates the most amazing made-to-order creations. Her unusual use of ingredients (fruity pebbles, junior mints, pretzels, etc.) is so clever and results in both delicious new flavour profiles and uniquely awesome compositions. One picture alone doesn't do it justice, so go check out her feed!

 

Cereal crusts were a happy-accident when I first started taking my pie game more seriously. The possibilities are endless!
